Double Blessings

My Peruvian Treasures - Luisa Tapia

A new connection has been blooming in the workroom and when it comes to supporting local businesses, ALCHEMY, is all about community building. It is our JOY to introduce to you Luisa Tapia of My Peruvian Treasures. Started in 2009, My Peruvian Treasures features handmade artisan jewelry, clothing, and bags that are not only made by Luisa, but by the families she collaborates with in Peru. Her passion for her Peruvian heritage inspired a line of sustainable and fairly-traded products that are extremely unique. "It is a double blessing! When you buy from my shop you help support me and my Peruvian artisans," shared Luisa. "It gives value to an art form, craftsmanship, that otherwise might be forgotten. It provides empowerment to the indigenous artisans to break cycles of poverty." Luisa's small business is rooted in a heart centered to be a Changemaker here in the USA and in her homeland of Peru. The road has not always been easy, however. Luisa’s story is one of perseverance, prayer, and faith.

FUNDRAISER UPDATE: At Alchemy and My Peruvian Treasures, we want to say thank you everyone that participated in our Fundraiser event. Because of your support we were able to collect $108.05 to benefit Puyusca Misiones in Lima-Peru. With those funds they'll be able to make the repairs of the children bathroom. Additionally to these funds the same evening St Luke UCC Lititz collected $355 to benefit the Clean Water Peru Ministry. Again thank you so much for your contributions. God bless you all!! ~ Sandra @ ALCHEMY

Born in Lima, Peru during a time of civil war, Luisa understood that if she was going to be successful she would have to take a “leap of faith” and move to the United States. As the oldest of five, it was her responsibility to make sure that her family could be stable financially. With dreams of owning her own fashion business, Luisa attended school for fashion design and worked eight years at a fashion studio in Peru. At 25 years old, her prayers of making it to the United States were answered. In 1996, Luisa moved to New York City where she was a nanny for 14 years and in that time, “had to put my dream into a suitcase,” she says. In need of new direction, she began to pray and declared 2009 as the “Time of God.” Through prayer, an opportunity to move to Lancaster came about. There was hesitation at first since it would mean that Luisa would have to start all over again on her own. The comfort zone that she had built while in New York made her wary of moving. That all changed when she attended a worship dance class where the teacher, without really knowing her said, “the place you are going to go, your talent is going to be used for God.” Within a few months, My Peruvian Treasures was born. Not only that, but with confirmation at her side, Luisa moved to Lancaster, PA. She worked as a full-time seamstress at Sight & Sound Theatre for a few years, until finally, putting all her faith in her small business, she went full-time with My Peruvian Treasures.

My Peruvian Treasures is a Social Business, all their products are Fairly traded and Hand made by Peruvian Artisans. They are a sustainable business as well, they use natural fibers like alpaca and organic cotton and their organic jewelry is made from natural sources. Great selection of Artisan Made Alpaca Clothing, Organic Pima Cotton for Ladies and Girls, Organic Jewelry made from Nuts, Seeds, Gemstones, Bull Horn. Handwoven Bags for all occasions and Gifts. Providing goods from 3 regions of Peru: coast (organic cotton), Andes/Highlands (Alpaca Fiber) and Jungle (Organic Jewelry).

Through perseverance, prayer, and faith Luisa's dreams became a reality. There have been many blessings through out her journey but her biggest blessing is that of the JOY that comes from being able to share the blessing of the success of her business with her Peruvian artisans and nonprofits that support women and children ministries. Ministries like that of Puyusca Misiones.

In 2014 Luisa was introduced to an amazing group of volunteers: 'Puyusca Misiones'. For many years they have been serving the children and women of the small village of Puyusca in the outskirts of Lima. Until last year they had permission to use the local school for their Sunday meetings, due to changes in the School administration they weren't allowed to use that space anymore. Early this year new doors of the small community building were open for them. The building is in really bad shape and it's not big enough for the size of the group (80-100 kids and 30-40 women approximately). But that is not holding them back from having a place where the children and women can be fed in their bodies and souls. And being empowered with new life skills to help them reach their fullest. Our goal is to help them build a small room where the moms can meet and learn. Also they need to repair the children bathroom and purchase tables and chairs for their classrooms.
